b  Dial up FAQ

f How will I make a dial up connection to connect to the Internet using an enet account?
Please make sure your computer is connected to your telephone line before starting the setup process. Click Here To Know Detail

f I have Wave (UTL) phone; do I need a Modem in my computer to connect to the Internet using enet's account?
Since the modem is in- built with the Wave (UTL) phone set, you don’t need to have any modem in your computer. But you should have a data cable to connect through Wave (UTL) phone to enet.

f Where can I get the data cable and how should I use the data cable?
You can get the data cable from enet Putalisadak office Ph. No: 2015300.
To install the data cable, plug one side of the data cable into COM port of your computer and another side into Wave (UTL)'s phone's data port (RJ 45)

f I have a Wave (UTL) phone, how can I make a dialup connection with the Wave (UTL) phone?
Please make sure your computer is connected to your telephone line before starting the setup process. Click Here To Know Detail

f How will I know that my computer setting and data cable is working properly?
When you start dialing “15300” then the mode light of your UTL phone (LST-2500) starts blinking. If your UTL phone set is LSP-2000 then it indicates “Connecting Modem 14.4bps”.

f When I dial “15300”, I get the message " Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or Connection Device)" what does it mean?
The message indicates that your modem setting and Data cable may have problem. Recheck you modem setting and data cable.

b  General Dial up FAQ

f Why do I get this after verification of username and password - "Connection could not be established, Check your password and Try again".
This occurs if you are entering incorrect information for your enet account name and password. Both the username and password are case sensitive! For example, the username "everest" is not the same as "Everest" or "EVEREST". Note that your username is not the same as your real name.

f Passwords are also case sensitive. Since passwords are not displayed}
(characters are substituted by *), this can be difficult to check. Make sure that your CAPS LOCK key is not on - this is the number one cause of password failures. Be careful to type it correctly. Asking Windows to save your password is one way to avoid this problem.
If you think you have entered the correct username and password, and that none of the above applies to your situation, please contact our Support Department for assistance.

f Why are your lines so busy?
Even though we might have sufficient dial-up lines at our end, you still get a busy signal. This is because the exchange at NTC is busy. You should retry after a few minutes or try during the early morning or late hours. If the problem persists, please contact Customer Support Department.
NOTE: if you get a "fast" busy tone, the exchange is busy. A slower busy tone indicates that our phone lines are actually busy.

f When I try to connect, I receive there is no dial tone message?
In an external or internal modem you need to ensure that the telephone line is connected properly. You should ensure that the cable is inserted in the ‘line’ socket and not the ‘phone’ socket.

f Sometimes, when I try to connect, I receive the message ‘the computer you are dialing is not answering’?
It is also essential to know the communication speed of your modem, i.e. the maximum speed at which it transmits data. This is usually measured in bits per second (bps). To correct this problem follows the steps below:
• Double click on My computer.
• Double click on Dialup Networking.
• Right click mouse button on COL icon.
• Click on properties.
• Click on general,
• Click on configure
• Again click on general
• Reduce the maximum speed of modem.

Modem Problems include:
• Trouble when logging on
• Downloads slow to nothing
• Garbage on the screen
Try turning your modem off then on. If there is a problem with the modem, this will usually reset it. If you have an internal modem, reset the modem using the software that came with it. If you cannot or are unable to do so, then shutdown the computer and reboot. Check the phone line to your modem by plugging a phone into it to see if there is a dial tone. Do not use any long extensions for your phone line. Unplug any phones, so that only the modem is plugged in.
Symptoms of telephone problems:
# Low connection speed
# Downloads slow to nothing
# Plug a phone into the modem line.
If you hear any noise such as crackling, humming, or voices call NTC and report that you have noise on your line.
Just being able to talk on the phone isn't enough for a modem line any noise on the line will mean slow or short connections and unexpected hang times and download speeds. If you have many extension lines on your phone, it may slow you Internet connection.

f When I dial 15300, I can hear the ring going through but there is no response. Why?
The numbers 15300 is our “hunting number” which has hundreds of underlying phone lines. Chances are that, when you dialed, it was trying to connect to one of these underlying phone lines, which was not functioning. An immediate redial could help you connect to a functioning line.

f Why do I never get connected at the actual speed of my modem?
The biggest factor in determining connection speed is telephone lines. Age of the telephone lines in your area, "line noise", and weather conditions can all affect your line quality. Noise you may or may not hear on your phone line will reduce your connection speed abilities. Also, there may be telephone network limitations that prevent you from connecting at the full 56000 bps, such as the age of the telephone exchange you are on, the distance you are from the exchange, and the nature of the equipment in the exchange.
Office PBX systems also restrict high-speed connections. If you have to dial 9 or 0 to get an outside line, your office uses a digital PBX telephone system, which means you also won't be able to achieve 56000bps rates.
To make sure you connect at the maximum speed, you can verify that you have
the latest update on your software programs and modem drivers (check your hardware and software vendors' web sites). We suggest external hardware modems for the best dial-up connection.

f Why do I get the following error message?
“Dial-up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of Network Protocols you specified in the Network section of Control Panel. Check your server type settings.”
This is because the TCP/IP protocol installed in your computer is either damaged or is corrupt. You can install a fresh copy of TCP/IP from your Windows Backup or the Setup Disk. Contact Customer Support for further help.

f How do I know when I am connected?
After you are connected, you will see two blinking icons of computers at the bottom right hand corner of your desktop (application tray). Double clicking on this will display more info on the connection.

f I keep getting disconnected from the system. Are you kicking me off? What can I do about it?
When using a modem to access on-line services, there will almost invariably be an occasional disconnection. If this is a chronic problem for you, this document will help you find out what's causing the disconnection, and what you can do about fixing it.
The most common reason for a disconnection is line noise. When there is extended static or noise on phone lines, the two modems exchanging data can't understand each other. Most modems will pause when there is noise on the line and wait to recover the connection, but occasionally this is not possible, and the modems will disconnect from each other. If you've only experiencing disconnection
infrequently, this is the most likely explanation. Dropped connections can occur when there is a sharp decrease in line quality during a call. [28.8] Modems will switch to rates as low as 4800 bps to compensate for these changes. If the loss of quality is extremely severe, they will drop the connection.

f When I log on, my modem says CONNECT 38400 (or 57600, or 115200). Am I really connected at that speed? I only have a 56 K (or 28.8 K) modem?
The CONNECT message that your modem reports can be one of two things. The first, known as the DCE ('Data Communicating Equipment') speed, reports the actual connection speed between the two modems across the phone lines: the maximum speed available with current modem technology is 57600. However, your modem could instead be reporting the DTE ('terminal equipment') speed, the speed at which your computer is sending information to your modem. The DTE speed can be 38400, 57600 or 115200 on most machines.

f How do I disconnect?
Double click on the two blinking icons of computers at the bottom right hand corner of your desktop and click on Disconnect.

b  Modem FAQ

f What does this error message mean: ” Computer is not receiving any response from the modem; check your modem and try again”?
If you have an external modem (one that is not inside the case of your computer): Is your modem connected and turned on? Is the cable seated firmly in both the modem and the computer? Is the correct serial port and/or modem selected? Is the modem connected to the correct port on the computer? The connection between the modem and the computer may be faulty, or the connection may have been broken. Check all connections, and then check them again. If the serial cable is old and the connections appear suspect, get another and try that.
Turn the modem off, wait 10 seconds, then try again, is the result the same? Some modems will "hang" and fail to respond after a power spike or brownout; if you are familiar with the modem lights, a hung modem will usually appear to have a different lighting array to one that is functioning normally. Powering the modem off, waiting a little, then powering it back on will normally fix such problems.
If you have an internal modem: Internal modems can get hung too, but there is no way to power them off without turning the computer off as well. Shut down your operating system, power down and - again - wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
If you still cannot solve the problem, then it is time to consult the experts. The problem may be that modem itself has malfunctioned and needs to be repaired, all the cables you tried may have been faulty, or the serial port on your computer is not operational. A hardware technician should be able to narrow down the exact problem fairly quickly.

f Why do I get this error message? “There is no dial tone. Make sure your modem is connected to the phone line properly”.
This message indicates that the modem is functioning, but it cannot detect a dial tone on the phone line. Normally, this means that there is a problem with the connection between the phone line itself and the modem - it is the equivalent of lifting the handset on a standard phone and hearing nothing.
The first things to check are the connections - that the jack connector on the modem is in the correct connection port (some modems have an additional connector usually labeled “Phone” which are for handsets) and that the line is firmly plugged into the correct phone outlet on the wall or skirting board.
If the above is not the case, then it is time to check the phone line itself. Unplug the phone line from the modem and plug in a standard handset. Lift the receiver. If there is a dial tone, then reconnect to the modem and try again. If there is no dial tone on the handset, then the problem is with the telephone line.

b  Internet FAQ

f What is the “Internet”?
The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers).
It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPANET. Today, the Internet is a public, cooperative, and self-sustaining facility accessible to hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

f What is World Wide Web (WWW)?
The WWW is one of the spaces in which the Internet is subdivided (shortly defined WWW or Web). In this way during the consultation a user can pass from a document to the other without taking care of the place where the respective servers physically are. The protocol for this aim is HTTP. The WWW documents are usually called pages; and can contain text and graphics, the whole co-ordinate by a specific language, called HTML, codifying the different objects. The reading program is called browser;. A connection present on a Web page can also point, besides another document, at a file in any shape (images, audio, video, and so on); at the "click" of the mouse it will be automatically reproduced or by the browser or by external applications. The three main components of World Wide Web are hypertexts, Internet and multimedia contents of documents.

f What is a URL?
URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator. URL is the address for a resource or site (usually a directory or file) on the World Wide Web and the convention that web browsers use for locating files and other remote services.
Here are some examples of URL's:
http://www.enet.com.np [ This is a web page at a commercial site called enet. ]
ftp://capital.net/home/u [ (or the first letter of your username)/username/www/ ] This is the directory you would use to upload your personal web page.
news:rec.gardens.roses [ This is a newsgroup on rose gardening. ]
The first part of a URL tells you the type of resource (or method of access) at that address. • http - a hypertext document or directory
• gopher - a gopher document or menu
• ftp - a file available for downloading or a directory of such files
• news - a newsgroup
• telnet - a computer system that you can log into from across the Internet
• WAIS - a database or document on a WAIS (Wide Area Information Search) database
• file - a file located on a local drive (like your hard drive)
The second part of a URL is typically the address of the computer where the data or service is located. Additional parts may specify the names of files, the port to connect to, or the text to search for in a database.
Here are a couple of other important things to remember about URLs:
1. A URL has no spaces.
2. A URL always uses forward slashes (//).
3. If you enter a URL incorrectly, your browser will not be able to locate the site or resource you want.
4. You can find the URL behind any link by passing your mouse pointer over the link. The pointer will turn into a hand and the URL will appear in the browser's status bar.

f What programs can I use to browse the WWW?
A Web (Internet) Browser is a software application that allows you to browse the World Wide Web (WWW). An Internet Browser basically interprets the programming language (HTML) of the Internet into the words and graphics that you see when viewing a web page. Some of the popular

f What is 'TCP/IP'?
TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This is the language governing communications between all computers on the Internet. TCP/IP is a set of instructions that dictates how packets of information are sent across multiple networks. Also included is a built-in error-checking capability to ensure that data packets arrive at their final destination in the proper order.
IP, or Internet Protocol, is the specification that determines where packets are routed to, based on their destination address. TCP, or Transmission Control Protocol, makes sure that the packets arrive correctly at their destination address. If TCP determines that a packet was not received, it will try to re-send the packet until it is received properly.
You must be running TCP/IP to have full Internet access. In Unix, TCP/IP is part of the operating system. In the DOS and Windows world, the functionality of TCP/IP is handled by Winsock. This piece of software takes care of your TCP/IP configuration information. On a Mac, you would use Apple's TCP/IP.

f What is a proxy server?
Proxy server is meant to improve the access speed of Internet. A proxy server improves browsing performance by functioning as a caching server. Using its cached web pages, the proxy server serves already-accessed web pages to requesting users without requiring outside access to the Internet.

f What does ‘PPP’ connection mean?
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) is a communications protocol used to transmit network data over telephone lines. PPP allows you to connect your computer to the Internet itself, rather than logging on through an Internet Service Provider's host computer and using UNIX commands through a shell. This type of connection lets you communicate directly with other computers on the network using TCP/IP connections. It is part of the TCP/IP suite of programs necessary to connect to and use the Internet.
