Troubleshooting Common Dial-up Networking (Duns) Error Codes For all Operating Systems
1.629- The port was disconnected by the remote machine.
There are many different causes for this type of error. The most common cause is an incorrect username or password, but it can also be caused by line noise or by a modem problem. If this error occurs after the connection status says Authenticating (or Verifying Username and Password), then it is probably caused by an incorrect username or password. Check your dialup username and password settings, and then try the connection again. If you receive this error before the connection gets to Authenticating (or Verifying Username and Password), then it is probably caused by line noise or modem problems. Delete old dial-up and make new dial-up, restart computer.
2. 630 The modem is busy or not responding. The computer is not receiving a response from the modem.
- This error may indicate the modem is damaged, not connected, or installed improperly. If you have an external modem, make sure the cable is connected, and the modem is powered on. If there have been electrical disturbances (including thunderstorms or power failure/surges) since the last time the modem worked that may be the cause. If the modem has never worked, double-check installation, and if possible, try the modem in another system.
3. 633 Port in use. Port already open. Your modem is being used by another application.
- This can sometimes occur with errant applications (poorly written software) not closing the port, or terminating abnormally. If this is the case, it may be necessary to power cycle the computer before the modem will be recognized. If some other device is actually using the modem (such as a voice/fax program or you are already on a dial-up connection), the solution is to terminate the other task, or to disable auto-answer features in its software.
Windows users can get a list of applications that are running (and might have the port opened) by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL and selecting the TASK LIST or TASK MANAGER (NT). This will display the actual program names - it may be difficult to pinpoint which, if any, programs are accessing the modem. Terminating tasks are about the only way - however, if you terminate certain tasks, your system may crash or become unstable. With Windows 98 ending the rnaapp task may solve the problem.
4. 650 The remote access server is not responding. The computer you are dialing into does not respond to a network request.
- This problem is often caused by a corrupt Dialup Networking connection. This error is often resolved by simply shutting down your computer and restarting. If a restart does not fix this, you may need to remove your old connection and recreate new connection. Restart computer.
5. 676 The line is busy.
- This error can occur if you are dialing the wrong number. There is a problem at your ISP or in the telephone network you have voice-mail or other custom calling feature that produces a stutter dial-tone. You haven't specified the proper country settings for your modem and the number you are dialing, or your modem doesn't support the country you are in. Call waiting; or, if you have call waiting, but your phone company doesn't support the disable call waiting code.
6. 678 The server is not responding. The computer you are dialing is not answering; try again later. There is no answer. PPP Modem Connect Failure.
- These types of errors are generally caused by an incorrect dialup number configured in your dialup settings. Check your dialup number and try the connection again. If your phone line has noise, you should clear noise from phone line. Dial number with regular phone and make sure you hear remote modem answer tones. UNCHECK Use dialing rules in Windows XP and 2000 and UNCHECK Use area code and Dialing Properties in Windows 98. Uninstalling and reinstalling the modem can sometimes help as well.
7. 680 There is no dial tone.
- This problem tends to occur between the modem and the phone line.
Make sure your telephone line is connected to your modem. Insert one end of the telephone wire into the wall socket and the other end into the back of the modem. When connecting the telephone line to the back of the modem, select the socket marked "Line" or "Telco". Unplug all other devices attached to the telephone line (e.g. personal answering machine), and make sure your telephone receiver is on the hook. If you have a call minder or answering service, check and clear your new messages. This occurs because the call minder gives a series of tomes to tell you. You have new messages which can sometimes interfere with the modem dial tone.
Uncheck the Wait for dial tone before dialing for Windows XP, 2000 and 98.
Restart your PC
Attempt dialing from your handset to the intended number excluding the 15300. If you cannot establish a connection this indicates a problem with your phone line. If it connects it indicates a problem with your PC or modem. Reinstall the modem using the modem provider’s software.
8. 691 Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain.
- This problem tends to be a problem during the authentication process. The main reason for this is an incorrect username or password and if your account is expired. Bear in mind these are both case-sensitive and the username must be lower case. Make sure caps lock is not on and your dialing correct hunting number (i.e.15300).
9. 692 Hardware failure in attached device.
- Try resetting the modem. Be sure the correct modem is being used by the dial-up connection and multiple modems are not installed. Adjust the modem handshake to negotiate the connection. Reinstall modem.
10. 718 PPP timeout.
- This error indicates a PPP conversation was started, but was terminated because the remote server did not respond within an appropriate time. This can be caused by poor line quality or a problem with the server (ISP). This error can occur when your modem has connected to the ISP and has sent username and password, but there is no response from the server. Sometimes, re-dialing will be successful.
This error can also occur if your account has expired, or if the username or password you are using is invalid.
This error can occur if you have LCP extensions enabled in the TCP/IP Properties of the connectoid and your ISP does not support LCP extensions.
This error may also occur if you have one or more network cards in your machine, and the cards do not have TCP/IP protocol enabled, or if the TCP/IP settings are incorrect. (Go to Networking in Control Panel to examine the properties of your network adapters; or, if you are not using the network card(s), disable them in Control Panel->System->Hardware.).
11. 720 Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the Server Type settings. Check your network configuration in the Control Panel and try the connection again. No PPP Protocols configured.
- This error is generally caused by incorrectly configured, missing, or corrupt Dialup Networking protocols. This problem can usually be resolved by just restarting your computer. If restarting does not resolve the problem, check your Dialup Networking settings for Windows XP and 2000 in dial up properties Networking, Internet Protocols (TCP\IP) should be checked and Windows 98 dial up properties, Server Types TCP\IP should checked.
12. 721 Remote PPP peer is not responding.
- Reboot the machine, verify your Username and Password, and try again. Uncheck Enable PPP LCP extensions. Make sure logon to network isn't checked. This can sometimes also be a communications problem caused by heavy line noise or modem problems. Try updating the modem drivers, units, commas, etc...And have a line noise test performed.
13. 734 The PPP link control protocol terminated.
- This error can occur if the Security tab in Windows XP and 2000 dial-up networking Modem Properties is set to send encrypted passwords and your ISP does not support encrypted passwords. In this case, the option to accept any authentication, including clear text, must be selected. This error is often caused by "Enable Multilink" being turned on.
14. 797 A connection to the remote computer could not be established because the modem was not found or was busy.
- This error occurs only in Windows 2000 and XP. The error can occur if the modem is no longer visible to the system, and may be a problem related to the modem driver, or system conflicts that cause the modem to work only some of the time. In some cases, rebooting the machine may "solve" the problem. If the modem is an external and is not powered on when the system is booted this error may occur: shut-down, power on the modem & re-boot the system.
